Why We Dream: Three Theories About the Sleeping Brain

Show notes

Three possible explanations for dreaming: - Memory consolidation: replaying and reorganizing the day's experiences during sleep. - Emotional processing: working through difficult feelings in symbolic form. - Random brain activity: the mind building stories from signals that fire during sleep. Also covered: REM sleep, when most vivid dreaming happens, and the recording's observation that most people have four to six dreams per night but quickly forget almost all of them. These are theories, not a settled explanation of why we dream.
